Trailer Features

Is it difficult to drive with the travel trailer?

Our trailers are lightweight, aerodynamic, and easy to maneuver and you should have no trouble towing them. Homegrown Trailers utilize a single axle which make them exceptionally easy to backup and maneuver into a campsite. The trick is to go slow and make small incremental adjustments, backing too quickly can misalign the trailer and cause frustration. Never hesitate to pull forward, straighten the trailer out and try again. Occasionally, and due to its light weight, rolling the trailer manually may be effective, but should only happen on flat ground when you are confident in your ability to slow and stop the trailer using only your body weight.

Can people ride in the trailer?

People are not allowed to ride inside the trailer while it is in motion. It is against the law and very unsafe.

Is there a limit to how many people and how much weight can be in the trailer?

The axle on our trailers can accommodate up to 3,500 pounds, but the trailer itself can accommodate more weight when the scissor jacks are in use.  We suggest limiting the number of occupants to 4 or less than 800 pounds

Will I still be able to charge the battery via the solar panels if it is raining or overcast?

Our trailers are solar-powered with ample battery systems. They are designed to be used comfortably off-grid in most situations. You will need to be cognizant of the solar situation and your usage, but this should be worth it for the added flexibility and freedom you’ll get (not to mention the environmental pride)! The table below gives you an indication of what you can expect from different light and usage conditions.

How does the composting toilet work?

Many people are confused by what composting toilets do, especially because there are many types out there. Homegrown Trailers uses a toilet system that has met the needs of tens of thousands of people, stays clean, avoids plumbing issues, and keeps you from having to deal with messy and busy dump stations. In our toilets, the liquids are diverted into a holding receptacle, which can be emptied responsibly in an on-grid toilet or in the outdoors (away from a campsite) since it's sterile. For solids, after you use the toilet, you will throw a mix of a special natural material over the top and close the chamber. Inside the chamber, it starts the drying and breakdown process and virtually eliminates odors. Any residual odors are dealt with via a small exhaust fan that ensures smells don't make their way into the trailer. When your solids collection container is full (every 7-30 days, depending on use), you can toss it into the trash or bury it at least 10 inches underground if you’re off-grid.

Note: In the future, Homegrown Trailers hopes to utilize a biodigester so that it can process waste from rental trailers, produce "green" power, and potentially make fertilizer for the forests that provide wood used to construct our trailers.

Does the trailer come with a heater or AC unit?

You can add a modular, infrared heater as a customization option. Due to the trailer’s superior insulation and ventilation we do not provide AC. AC units also draw significant amounts of energy and would deplete battery capacity in a matter of hours. If AC is necessary, we suggest the use of a portable unit only while connected to shore power.

Is there storage in the trailer?

Yes, there is a small amount of externally-accessible storage in the back hatch of the trailer as well as internally-accessible space under the beds and in the cabinets and drawers.

Are there bike racks in the trailer?

No, we do not have bike racks installed in the trailer. However, the twin bunks can be stowed, providing space for two bikes (additional bikes can be stored in the kitchen/galley area). Many people choose to use roof-mounted bike racks on their vehicle.

What type of gas mileage can we expect to get while towing the trailer?

Our trailers are designed to be lightweight and aerodynamic in order to minimize drag and maximize efficiency. Every vehicle is different, however, we expect that you’ll approximate your vehicle’s city mileage-per-gallon estimates when on the highway. The biggest factor in lowering miles-per-gallon is driving styleㅡaccelerating slowly, reducing speed on uphill climbs, and maintaining a consistent speed on the open road will greatly improve your fuel economy.

Does the trailer have an aux port/radio/CD player?

Not at this time, but we encourage you to bring along music or instruments to enhance your campfire time.

Is there a nightly discount depending on how long you rent the trailer?

Yes! The standard rental rates are as follows (check www.homegrowntrailers.com/rental for potential discounts), although we are currently offering $20/night off these rates.

3 - 5 Nights: $179 per night

6 - 11 Nights: $169 per night

12 - 21 Nights: $159 per night

22+ Nights: $149 per night
 

How do I pay for the rental?

We accept Visa, Mastercard, Amex, and Discover credit cards.

At the time of booking, we charge 25% of your trip amount, which is applied to your total amount due. This amount becomes non-refundable 30 days before your pick-up date. We will automatically process your remaining balance 15 days before your pick-up date, at which point 100% of the booking fees will be non-refundable.

Do you charge a security deposit?

A $500 security deposit authorization (not a charge) is required at the time of pick-up. Please come prepared with a credit card that can accept this authorization, which will be held until you return the trailer in the same shape as when you received it (including all equipment). If damages do occur, you will be responsible for the entire cost of repair, including parts and labor. Any damages will pull from your security deposit up to $500 after which time your insurance company will provide coverage for the remaining amount and/or your security deposit depending on your deductible.  Please check with your insurance company to understand your level of coverage prior to renting a Homegrown Trailer.

Are there any additional fees when renting the trailer?

No, other than a potential delivery fee (see below).

Is there a minimum or maximum number of nights for rentals?

There is a minimum of 3 nights per rental. There is no maximum number of nights for rentals, but for rentals beyond 30 nights, please contact us at rentals@homegrowntrailers.com.

Where and when can I pick-up my rental trailer?

We are located at 511 6th Street S, Kirkland, WA 98033. You can pick up your trailer between 10:00am and 5:00pm on the first day of your rental; however, at the time of booking we do ask you to indicate an approximate time that you’ll be picking up. Please arrive close to that time to help make the rental process as smooth as possible. If you require a pick-up time outside of 10:00am – 5:00pm, you may do so on a case-by-case basis for a $50 fee. Please email rentals@homegrowntrailers.com to arrange this special circumstance.

When can I return my rental trailer?

You can return your rental trailer between 10:00am and 5:00pm on the last day of your rental; however, at the time of booking we do ask you to indicate an approximate time that you’ll be returning. Please come back near that time to help make the rental process as smooth as possible.

What if I am late returning or picking up the trailer?

We rely on trailers being returned on time to effectively run our business. That’s why we’ll need to apply penalty charges if you’re late. If you return the trailer later than 5:00pm on the last day of your booking, you will be charged $50 per hour for the first 2 hours. If you return the trailer later than 7:00pm, you will be charged an additional night at full cost ($199/night). At that point, you have two return options: (1) Return the trailer between 8:00am and 10:00am the next morning. (2) Park the trailer at our facility and use our after-hours key drop; however, if you utilize the key drop option, keep in mind that you are responsible for any damages to the trailer until a rental associate is able to accept the keys at 8:30am and conduct a proper walkthrough. If the trailer is not returned by 10:00am the next morning, we will assume you are not returning the trailer and begin pursuing the proper legal recourse, during which time you will continue to be charged full rental rate ($199/night) plus a $100/night penalty until the trailer is returned. Regardless of your delay, we expect full communication via email to rentals@homegrowntailers.com with updates regarding the expected return time.

How old do you have to be in order to rent a trailer?

You must be 25 years old with a valid driver’s license to rent a Homegrown Trailer. Please make sure you bring your driver’s license, which we’ll scan at time of pick-up along with your insurance card.

What is your cancellation policy?

At the time of booking, we charge 25% of your trip amount, which is applied to your total amount due. This amount becomes non-refundable 30 days before your pick-up date. We will then automatically process your remaining balance 15 days before you pick-up date, at which point 100% of the booking fees will be non-refundable.

How can I change or cancel my reservation?

If you need to change or cancel a reservation (up to 16 days before your rental), please log-in to your account and make the changes there or email us at rentals@homegrowntrailers.com.

Can I add on an extra night at the last minute?

We prefer you modify your reservation online 16 days or more in advance. If you do not know about extra nights before that time, we ask that you request additional nights prior to pick-up so we can reserve availability. If, for some unexpected reason, you want to extend the duration of your rental while on your trip, you must contact us during business hours and receive confirmation from a member of the Homegrown Trailers team that the extra days are indeed available.

What if I return the trailer before the date it is due?

That is acceptable, however, no refund will be offered.

Can a rental trailer be delivered to me?

Normally, our customers pick up their trailers from our Kirkland, WA facility and then head straight for their adventures. But trailers may be delivered to either a property for on-site setup or to another location in order to help your travel logistics. Deliveries must be arranged on a case-by-case basis and you will need to contact rentals@homegrowntrailers.com to confirm viability before booking. Remote delivery service will incur delivery charges: 0-25 miles = $100; 26-50 miles =$200. Pickups incur another fee (see below). Contact us for deliveries over 60 miles.

How far can I take the trailer?

There is no limit to your trip, but we do ask that you let us know where you are headed so that we can track estimated mileage for maintenance purposes.

Can we travel one-way to our destination or do we have to travel round trip?

If you are unable to return the trailer in Kirkland, WA we may be able to come and pick it up. This must be arranged on a case-by-case basis and you will need to contact rentals@homegrowntrailers.com to confirm the feasibility of such an arrangement before booking. Remote return service will incur delivery charges: 0-25 miles = $100; 26-50 miles = $200. Deliveries incur another fee (see above). Contact us for returns over 60 miles.

What kind of insurance do I need to tow the rental trailer?

Homegrown Trailers now requires trailer rental insurance to be purchased through its booking system at 10% of the rental rate, which goes directly to our partner, Wheelbase. They provide $1,000,000 in liability coverage and $200,000 in comprehensive and collision coverage, all with a $500 deductible per rental period. In the case of a physical loss, Homegrown Trailers would first apply all or part of your $500 security deposit and then potentially make an insurance claim.

How do I know my hitch and towing capacity?

Your vehicle should be capable of towing 2,700-3,500 lbs depending on how full you pack your rental trailer with food, water, clothes, and gear (our Woodland model is about 2,500 lbs completely empty). You should have at least a Class II receiver hitch with a 2" trailer ball that is ideally about 19" off the ground at its top (16-24" works) as well as a functioning 4-pin wire connector. You may refer to this helpful resource for information on vehicle weights to see if your vehicle is able to tow our trailer: http://www.trailerlife.com/trailer-towing-guides.  If you have any questions or concerns please check with your dealership, owner’s manual, or email us at rentals@homegrowntrailers.com. If you need advice about installing a towing package on your vehicle or if you want to rent an appropriate vehicle from a third-party, please contact us and we will assist you. If you want to confirm that your current tow package is acceptable, you may visit our Kirkland facility, by appointment, before your rental for a quick pre-check. Contact us in advance if you would like this inspection of your towing package or a tutorial on driving with the trailer. In the end, you are responsible for arriving with a capable vehicle—no refunds will be offered at time of pick-up if you are unable to properly tow our trailers. At pick-up, we will offer towing hookup assistance and inspection as well.

Where is the closest place to have a hitch installed?

There are a number of locations in the Puget Sound area that can install a hitch on your vehicle. Here is a list of business to help get you started:

What if I don’t have the right vehicle for towing?

If you don’t have a vehicle that can sufficiently tow a Homegrown Trailer, you may want to exchange your vehicle with a friend or family member who has a larger vehicle with a hitch for the duration of your trip. If you need to rent a vehicle, below are a few options. Check the individual sites for availability and pricing (FYI, quotes often depend on estimated miles traveled). Make sure that you use your personal insurance and make sure that it extends to the trailer.

Enterprise Truck Rentals - They give our customers a special pickup truck rental rate of $75/day (24-hour period) or $385/week with $0 mileage fee and no towing fee. They do not offer one-way rentals. There are three Puget Sound locations, Seattle (SoDo), Kent/Tukwila, and Tacoma/Fife, although on a case-by-case basis they may deliver a truck to a nearby Kirkland, WA Enterprise Rent-a-Car location.

U-Haul - There are numerous corporate and franchise locations around the Puget Sound area.

Del's Truck Rentals - This is a good local option in Woodinville, WA.

While I am renting a trailer, do I need to plug it in to recharge the batteries?

What do I need to bring for my trip?

We'll make sure that the trailer’s battery is charged, your water tank is filled, and you have all the kitchen equipment, bedding, and basic bathroom supplies that you'll need on your journey. So all you need to bring are your clothes, towels, adventure gear, food… and s’more ingredients!

Can I smoke in the trailer?

We promote a non-toxic environment and, therefore, do not allow smoking in the trailers. Any trailers that have been smoked in will be immediately subject to release of the $500 security deposit for deep cleaning. Thank you for understanding and only smoke well away from the trailer.

Can I bring my pet?

Certain trailers are designated as dog-friendly (no other animals), so please contact us to confirm we can accommodate your needs.

Are there any places we cannot take the trailer?

We prohibit use on unmaintained gravel or dirt roads, deep sand, or any extremely steep or uneven surfaces.

What if we get a flat tire?

The best option is to call AAA if you are a member of their roadside assist program. Some insurance companies offer similar services. We also provide a spare tire and integrated scissor jacks so that you can change the tire yourself with minimal hassle. Once on the road again, we recommend that you take the damaged tire to the closest tire shop so they can repair/replace it in case it happens again. We will reimburse you for this cost. Please call or email us to let us know this repair/replacement is occurring.

Who do I contact if I encounter a problem with the trailer?

Purchasing a Trailer

What are your showroom hours?

Our showroom is open Monday through Friday, 10:00am - 4:00pm, excluding major U.S. holidays. Please call to give us a heads up that you will be coming: 425-892-8566.

If I purchased today, when would my trailer to available?

At the present time, we are delivering trailers in fall 2016. We will confirm the exact deliver date when you purchase.

Do you offer different color or material options for the trailer?

We offer purchase customers a few material and color options for exterior and interior finishes such as siding, trim, and flooring. Please contact us for options.

Are there different floorplans?

The main interior layout option that purchase customers have is to choose between bunks and a dinette in the left-rear of the trailer.

It's also worth mentioning that our layout and components provide flexibility for several configurations. For example, the bench/table area converts into a queen bed, the top bunk (if selected) can pivot to the wall and convert into a couch, or both bunk beds can be easily stowed for bulky storage such as bikes. Some people prefer to keep the top bunk platform horizontal and use it for lots of extra storage, even if only 2 or 3 people are sleeping in the trailer.

What are your purchase pricing terms?

If you are paying in full, 50% of the cost becomes non-refundable 45 days before pick-up. Licensing fees are due at time of pick-up.

If you are paying with a deposit, the deposit becomes non-refundable 45 days prior to pick-up. The remaining balance , sales tax on the remaining balance, and licensing fees are due at time of pick-up.

Do you charge tax?

Yes, 9.5% sales tax will be applied to all purchases along with appropriate licensing, title, and registration fees.

Do you offer a warranty on purchases?

Homegrown Trailers warrants each new trailer to be free from defects in materials and workmanship for a period of 3 years from the date of purchase. We will repair or replace, without charge, any parts found to be defective because of imperfect workmanship or materials within a reasonable time after the trailer is returned at purchaser’s expense to our Kirkland facility.

This warranty is extended to the original purchaser only and does not extend to any other persons to whom the trailer may be transferred.

Provisions of this warranty shall not apply to any product which is found to be modified or altered in any way, nor shall the warranty apply to any defect or malfunction which was caused by damage, unreasonable use, or failure to provide reasonable and necessary maintenance. This warranty will not cover damage caused by overloading the trailer beyond stated capacities or improper use. Undercarriage rust is not covered by the warranty.

What equipment comes with a trailer?

In addition to all of the built-in features, we will provide the trailer’s appliancesㅡincluding the induction cooktop and mini-fridge, mattresses, fire extinguisher, smoke/carbon dioxide detector, crank handle for scissor jacks, wheel chocks, and modular door step.

Do I have to store the trailer in a covered area?

We recommend that you store your trailer in a protected area, as exposure to weather and sun may fade your siding. The best place to store a trailer is in a fully enclosed area and, luckily, our trailers fit in a standard residential garage. A semi-open carport is another good option. Trailer covers and well-secured tarps provide decent protection as well. It is worth noting that siding can easily be refinished if it does weather (see next question).

Does the cedar siding require a lot of upkeep?

The cedar should be re-stained every 10+ years, depending on stain choice, storage location, and exposure to weather and sun.

Travel Questions

Do I have to park at an RV site or a standard tent campground?

Most tent sites at campgrounds  have a max trailer/RV limit of 18-20’, which is right at the length of a Homegrown Trailer. So, you have ultimate camping flexibility and the option to utilize “no reservation “ sites and often times book a “tent site” last minute. RV sites with full hook-ups tend to be the first booked in most campgrounds.

Where can I go safely “off-grid”?

You can stay in remote, off-grid camping areas (also known as "dispersed" or "boondocking" sites) that are accessible by maintained roads. Many public lands allow you to camp or park a travel trailer legally, including National Forest Service, Bureau of Land Management (BLM), Fish & Wildlife Service, Army Corps of Engineers, Bureau of Reclamation, State Parks, and State-owned lands. Check with the specific lands you are planning to visit for their usage guidelines. You can also camp on private lands with permission. Here are a few good resources for more info:

How much does it cost to take the trailer on a Washington state ferry? What should I be prepared for?
